How to Join

There are three types of membership of IAPS: National committee, local committee, and individual member.

 National Committee (NC)

A national committee represents one or more countries, and pays an annual membership fee which entitles its members to attend IAPS events (for more information see the charter).

The procedure for becoming an NC is as follows:

1. Fill out the NC Application Form and send to ec@iaps.info

2. Pay the membership fee (email the Executive Committee to check the amount)

3. On completion of these two steps the EC will vote on accepting your application, and if successful you then become a probationary NC, and your members can attend IAPS events.

4.  At the next AGM the members of IAPS will vote on accepting your application, and if successful you then become a full member.

Local Committee (LC)

A local committee represents a geographical region, or a university, within a country (that doesn’t have, or isn’t suitable for, an NC), and pays 1/3 of the membership fee that an NC for that country would pay.

For LC membership the LC Application Form should be filled out and returned to the EC, otherwise the application process is the same as for an NC.

Individual Membership (IM)

Individual membership is available for physics students who do not have access to an NC or LC.  A student who is a citizen of a country/area which doesn’t have an NC/LC, but studies in a university which does have access to an NC/LC can be a member of IAPS through the country they study in, regardless of their nationality.

The application process for individual membership is as follows:

1. Send the following details to members@iaps.info for our records:

a) Full name

b) Date of Birth

c) University

d) Nationality

e) Email Address

f) Postal Address

2.  Pay the membership fee of €10 (this should be paid before, but if necessary at, ICPS)

3. Upon completion of these two steps you become a probationary IM and can attend IAPS events, and at the next AGM the membership will vote on accepting your application, at which point you become a full member.

Please note:

1. If a committee fails to pay the membership fee then its members are not entitled to attend IAPS events, and failure to pay the fee two years in a row will result in expulsion from IAPS, after which the committee will need to re-apply for membership.

2. It is important that an NC/LC actually represents ALL of the physics students in the country/region that they are supposed to represent.  It should not be the case that students in a country/region that has an NC/LC do not have access to IAPS events because their committee only represents a subsection of the area that they should cover.

3. For committee applications, the EC must receive your application form and membership fee payment in good time (e.g. at least a few weeks) before an event, e.g. ICPS, in order for your members to be able to attend that event as members of an NC/LC (otherwise they will each have to join as an IM).  This is so that the EC can process your application, and receive confirmation from the European Physical Society, who manage our bank account, that your payment has been received (and this takes some time).
