LAMELIS 2015 – Summer school on Lasers in Medicine and Life Sciences

The city of Szeged is proud to have been chosen as the site of one of the four pillars of a massive European laser project entitled ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure). Szeged is going to host ELI-ALPS (Attosecond Light Pulse Source), a facility dedicated to ultra-short laser pulses. Apart from breaking new ground in the study of very fast atomic and molecular processes, it is also expected to bring about improvements in medicine and life sciences. To discuss and disseminate the implications of these developments, the University of Szeged organised a summer school entitled Lasers in Medicine and Life Sciences (LAMELIS) in 2014 (the talks are available on Youtube). The organisers feel that the feedback they have received on the quality of the talks and the atmosphere of the first event is not only an encouragement but also an obligation to establish a tradition, so they announce a LAMELIS again this year. The LAMELIS 2015 summer school will be held between 13th and 18th July.

The summer school is open to both medical students and physics students. Although the theoretical depth of talks is tailored for medical students, the programme can also benefit physics students as they can learn of medical applications of lasers directly from distinguished experts of the field and receive first-hand information on the current status of ELI-ALPS.

ICPS 2014 in Heidelberg

The International Conference of Physics Students (ICPS) 2014 will take place from 10th to 17th of August 2014 in Heidelberg, Germany. It is the main event of IAPS and is organised by physics students for physics students. It will bring together around 450 young researchers from all over the world and features invited lectures by top-class scientists, presentations and posters by students as well as exciting workshops, lab tours and a physics show at Heidelberg University. A one-day trip to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is included in the program and the participants will be able to visit many exciting experiments. Additional excursions to research facilities and world leading companies as Mercedes, Bosch or TRUMPF will give an insight into some of Germany’s state of the art research. As guest speakers we can already present Metin Tolan (Shaken, not stirred! James Bond in the Focus of Physics), Karlheinz Meier (From Ions to Electrons – Physical Models of Brain Circuits) and John Dudley, president of the European Physical Society (Surviving in Science: What they don’t tell you about careers in research!). More guest lectures will be announced soon!

Winter Kindergarten of Theoretical Physics 2014

The Society of Physics Students Migacz, University of Wroclaw Faculty of Physics and Astronomy are pleased to announce the Winter Kindergarten of Theoretical Physics 2014 which will take place in Karpacz, Poland, from March 2nd to 9th (Sunday–Sunday), 2014. It will be organized in partnership with the well-known Winter School of Theoretical Physics.

The Kindergarten is a week-long conference designed for undergraduate and master students (PhD students are encouraged to take part in the 50th School of Theoretical Physics). The programme provides participants with lectures for every level of knowledge, including lectures given by special guests from the School of Theoretical Physics. Also all lectures of the School are opened for participants of the Kindergarten.

Students can participate actively either by giving a fifteen-minutes-long speech or a lecture lasting up to one hour.

Short speeches are recommended for younger students, who are willing to present their current projects or scientific interests. Apart from that there will be a poster session, with obligatory three-minute presentation about the poster’s topic.

This year Kindergarten  is expanding to a new area – computational physics. It is a branch of science, where Physics meets computers and numerical methods. Therefore we invite you to take part in lectures and workshops devoted especially to this subject.

On the other hand, the scientific classes will be interspersed with skiing, snowboarding and mountain trips.

Kindergarten’s participants are strongly encouraged to prepare their own lectures or posters.

The Winter Kindergarten of Theoretical Physics 2014 will be held on March 2-9, 2014 in Krucze Skały resort in Karpacz (50° 46′ 10.80″ N, 15° 46′ 2.97″ E).
